| Resumo | Agrarian reform policies directly impact Amazonian forest. In this study we estimate deforestation through 2013 in 2739 (82%) of the 3330 settlement projects in Legal Amazonia, and we estimate carbon stocks in these areas in two different periods: pre-modern (prior to 1970) and recent (2013). To estimate deforestation we used deforestation data in forested areas from the Amazon Deforestation Monitoring Project (PRODES) updated through 2013 and in Cerrado (savanna) biome areas from the Deforestation Monitoring in Brazilian Biomes Project (PMDBBS) updated through 2010. Integrated PRODES-PMDBBS polygons were used as erase features on maps of pre-modern and 2013 carbon stocks in the settlements, which were obtained from overlap between vector maps of settlements and a biomass map recently developed for the whole of Legal Amazonia. The results indicated that the rural settlements analyzed in this study contributed 21% (161,847 km2) of the deforestation in Legal Amazonia (758,638 km2) through 2013. We estimated that 40% of the forest in rural settlements in Legal Amazonia was cleared through 2013. Out of this total, 72% (116,848 km2) was in the Federal Settlement Project category (or PA = Projeto de Assentamento Federal). We estimated that settlement areas held 6.43 Pg C in the pre-modern period, which was substantially reduced to 3.84 Pg C in 2013. This reduction can be attributed to smallholder activity and to other external actors such as loggers. The implementation of new settlements should consider potential carbon-stock losses, especially in areas with high carbon stocks in the forests of Legal Amazonia. |
